Good news! Apparently there is no need to spend taxpayer money on primaries next year, at least for the U.S. Senate seat.
The Virginia Associated Press (AP) Managing Editors and the Virginia Capitol Correspondents Association (VCCA) have already picked the candidates that will run in the general election and there is no surprise here; they have picked the two Washington professional politicians, former DNC chair Tim Kaine, and former Senator George Allen.
The AP Editors and VCCA have decided to hold a general election debate in December between Washington Establishment candidates Kaine and Allen, so apparently there is no need for any of us mere citizens to go to the polls to pick the candidate we would like to represent us.
Although they did not specifically exclude the other candidates who are in the primary race, the criteria to qualify for the debate effectively did just that. If applied to the current field of GOP Presidential candidates everyone whose name is not Romney or Perry can go home now.
If this is going to be the norm, maybe we should just do away with primaries and let the media and the Washington party establishments pick all of our candidates from now on. They did a great job of picking our last GOP Presidential candidate.
Perhaps we can also get them to pick the winner of the debate, and then we can just forego the general election too.
Our government is supposed to be “Of the People, By the People, and For the People”, but what we seem to get these days is “Of the Party, By the Media, and Who cares what the People think”.
